Donald Ray Edwards, born on October 29, 1940, in Houston, Texas, to the late Pastor Lawrence and Ethel Edwards, was the third of seven siblings. From his early years, he demonstrated a passion for life, a love for sports, and a deep devotion to his faith. He attended and graduated from Jack Yates High School, where his athletic talent shone on the football field. He continued his love for the game at Wiley College, where he not only played football but also began to forge a life of purpose and commitment. Donald Ray's journey of faith was integral to who he was. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior early in life, and his love for the Lord was evident in everything he did. As a member of Willing Workers Baptist Church and later, First Missionary Baptist Church, he grew in his spiritual walk and shared that devotion with others through music and service. In the 1960s, Donald Ray joined the gospel group Heavenly Gospel Singers, where his powerful voice and heartfelt faith helped inspire countless souls. In the 1980s, alongside his beloved sister Eileen Edwards, he co-founded Heavenly Voices, a mass choir that initially brought together members from both First Missionary Baptist Church and New Jerusalem Baptist Church. The choir grew to encompass voices from many different congregations, a testament to Donald Ray's leadership and his gift of bringing people together through music. He directed and sang with Heavenly Voices for many years, creating an enduring legacy in the gospel music community.
Away from the choir, Donald Ray had many loves. He was a devoted football fan, whether playing the game or cheering it on, and he enjoyed playing dominos and spending time with family and friends. His warm heart, infectious smile, and easygoing nature made him a beloved figure in his community, and he will be remembered for his ability to light up any room with his presence. Donald Ray is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Ethel Edwards; his brother, Lawrence Edwards Jr.; his “play brother” Jesse Anderson; and longtime friends Willie Thorton and Beatrice Jones. He leaves behind a loving family, including his siblings John, Alvin Sr. (Rosalynn), Eileen, Diane, and Ralph (Bobbie), along with a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will cherish his memory forever.
Though he is no longer with us, Donald Ray’s impact remains—through the music, the faith, and the love he shared with all who were fortunate enough to know him.
