Mrs. Bobbie Jean Hawkins Darthard was born on March 25, 1935, in the Mims Community of Brazoria, Texas, to Rev. Jonathan B. and Darthula Hawkins. Bobbie was raised in the Freeport Community, where she was active in both her church and school. At an early age, she accepted Christ and was baptized by Rev. A.H. Beck, the founding pastor of New Jerusalem Baptist Church. From the church’s inception in September 1944, Bobbie remained a devoted and faithful member throughout her life. A proud graduate of R.O. Hara Lanier High School, Class of 1953, Bobbie went on to further her education at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas. Gifted musically, she found great joy in singing and playing the piano, sharing her talents generously within her church and community. Bobbie’s professional life was marked by dedication and service. She worked with the Head Start Program and Brazosport ISD before beginning a long and fulfilling career with Weiner’s Department Store, where she faithfully served until her retirement. Though petite and soft-spoken, Bobbie’s presence was warm, commanding, and filled with grace. Her quiet strength and kind spirit touched everyone she encountered.
Bobbie was united in marriage to Mr. Van L. Darthard, and together they were blessed with five children. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, step-father Mr. I.J. Jones; siblings: Jonathan B. Hawkins Jr., Joann Burse, Clara Anthony, Esther Pamplin, Letha Hawkins, Alice Moore, and Lottie Sanders. She leaves to cherish her precious memory her five children: Bobby Tyrell Darthard, Terry Ivan Darthard (Dorothy), Melanie Arnett Hubbard, Charles James Darthard (Kimberly), and Chris Arnold Darthard (Angela); her loving siblings: Gertie Davis (William), Judy Mitchell, and Robert Hawkins; fourteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will forever hold her in their hearts. Mrs. Bobbie Jean Hawkins Darthard’s life was a testament of faith, devotion, and love — a beautiful legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
